Lapierre e-Sensium 2.2

The bicycle manufacturer Lapierre, hailing from France, has a history of over 70 years. The company has extensive experience in producing high-quality road bikes.

However, recently they seem to have placed more emphasis on the market for comfortable and durable urban commuting bikes, producing a large number of lightweight and comfortable e-bikes.

The e-Sensium series offers a variety of electric commuting and fitness bikes tailored to different groups of people.

The flagship product of this series is the Lapierre e-Sensium 2.2, which has left a deep impression on cycling enthusiasts with its high-quality components and internal cable routing design.

It is an aluminum alloy electric comfort endurance commuter bike that allows you to maintain efficient power output while enjoying a comfortable riding position.

Riding Experience

I have a great passion for cycling, so much so that I’ve been riding bikes for decades. However, due to aging, I had to stop after riding 50 miles each time. This often left me feeling disappointed until I purchased this new e-bike.

The Lapierre e-Shaper 3.2 has truly made a difference for me. The large yet slim tires are more suitable for maneuvering between cities compared to my mountain bike.

The straight handlebars and higher head tube of this bike, as opposed to those aggressive road bikes, have made my riding position incredibly enjoyable. My life has changed.

This bike allows me to explore the city and conquer those hilly terrains on weekends. I want to share my real cycling story with you.

Let’s start with the drawbacks of this bike. The battery capacity is indeed relatively small, which means its range is not particularly high.

However, you can purchase an additional battery for around $550 as I did, and swap it while riding. There is also a backpack available for carrying the spare battery.

Urban Commuting

In the past, commuting to work was always a painful experience for me. I had to take two crowded buses, and I often wore headphones to block out the noise around me.

The lack of exercise made my body increasingly sluggish, and my mountain bike was only used for weekend workouts.

However, everything changed when I bought this e-bike for commuting. I’m more than happy to ride it every day. My home and workplace are quite far apart, and I even have to traverse a long stretch of hilly road.

The electric assist seems to handle it all exceptionally well. I had never ridden an e-bike before, so I wasn’t sure how it should be set up.

But when I turned on the assist switch and started pedaling, I realized that this could be completely different from any bike I had ridden before.

The electric assist allows me to pedal effortlessly and conquer steep terrain, making it easy to navigate through congested traffic segments.

Climbing on Weekend

Compared to traditional road bikes, this bike features wider tires that make it look more like a gravel bike’s tires.

So whether it’s paved asphalt roads or gravel mountain trails, it can handle them perfectly.

One of my favorite places to ride is China Camp State Park, located in the north of San Francisco. The park is known for its beautiful views of the San Francisco Bay and challenging terrain.

The singletrack and fire roads in this park are my favorites! I must say, the slight bumps and moderate climbs make me enjoy this route a lot, and I can easily handle any challenges.

Not only that, but I also get to see coastal scenery and stunning hillside landscapes along the way.

Another favorite riding spot of mine is Mount Tamalpais State Park, located across the Golden Gate Bridge.

The park offers some of the most challenging terrain in the area, with steep climbs and technical descents. However, the views from the mountaintop make all the effort worthwhile.

Overall, my e-bike has allowed me to experience completely different cycling scenarios. Whether it’s commuting on weekdays or weekend riding workouts, it provides me with a rich and effortless riding experience.

Specification

The Lapierre e-Sensium 2.2 is a high-performance electric assist bike that impressed me with its sleek design featuring internal cable routing and a powerful motor.

The lightweight road bike frame combines with the high-output Ebikemotion system X35+ motor. The integrated design makes the entire bike look less bulky compared to other e-bikes. Despite its modest battery capacity, the powerful torque still enables you to conquer steep hills.

The powerful drivetrain also gives me a fast and smooth feeling. The complete Shimano Sora R3000 setup makes the bike look coordinated and is a reliable configuration.

The braking system is also top-notch, with Tektro Rotor 160mm disc brakes providing stronger braking performance compared to rim brakes, which instills confidence for mountain adventures.

In summary, you can ride it for both commuting on paved roads and navigating through off-road trails. It performs excellently in both scenarios.

Lapierre e-Sensium 2.2 vs Giant Defy, Advanced 2

Giant Defy, Advanced 2

Both bikes are geared towards endurance riding. Based on the geometry data and my riding experience, both bikes are very comfortable with their high handlebars.

In terms of frame material, the first one uses an aluminum alloy frame, which is more sturdy and durable but comes with a heavier weight. The second one features a higher-end carbon fiber frame, but it may be less durable in terms of longevity.

In terms of gearing, the first bike has an 18-speed drivetrain, making it more suitable for daily commuting. On the other hand, although both bikes fall into the endurance category, the second bike’s 22-speed drivetrain makes it more suitable for racing purposes.

Canyon offers a very affordable price this time, and the two choices of wheel sizes make it more suitable for a wide range of riders’ heights.

The higher-end Shimano 105 drivetrain provides a premium shifting experience. As for the latter option, although it comes at a higher price, it features an electric assist system that allows the bike to conquer steeper mountains.

The abundance of mounting holes on the frame makes the Canyon Endurace CF 7 Disc more suitable for long-distance rides. You can install numerous accessories like saddlebags to carry essential items such as tents and sleeping bags.

This is a highly performance-oriented gravel bike with a sleek design and a wide range of color options. It features a single chainring setup that offers high tolerance and is less prone to errors when riding on bumpy terrain.

On the other hand, the former option leans more towards leisurely commuting rides, paired with a powerful motor that is suitable for riders with lower physical fitness or those aiming to conquer higher peaks.

Summary

Above is our review of the Lapierre e-Sensium 2.2. This electric commuter bike is highly suitable for long-distance leisure rides or commuting.
