BMC Alpenchallenge 01 TWO Commuter Riding Review

As a commuter bike equipped with high-end components, you can trust its commuting ability.

Perhaps many people have trouble with the crowd and the constant flow of vehicles when riding in the city. And this BMC Alpenchallenge 01 TWO is equipped with an Alpenchallenge 01 fork, which is made of full carbon. It is light enough in weight to ensure a responsive steering ability. This allows me to adjust my direction quickly and weave freely among pedestrians when riding on the sidewalk.

And its 767mm standing height makes it easy to stop while I’m waiting for a traffic light.

Of course, you can be equally assured in terms of speed, with the 2X11 drivetrain bringing more options in terms of gearing.

Once I had to take a side road and speed up due to a minor situation on my way to the office. Thankfully I wasn’t late that day, and the excellent shifting system allowed me to shift accurately and switch between city roads and back alleys with ease.

BMC Alpenchallenge 01 TWO Fitness Cycling Review

The BMC Alpenchallenge 01 TWO is not just for city commuting, you can also use it for fitness. the Continental Contact Speed tires are perfect for fitness bikes.

First of all, the 700X28C size tire brings enough grip for my ride, while the double puncture protection allows me to ride without worrying about the gravel on the road. And its rough Slick profile allows me to ride faster on asphalt roads.

I usually come to the countryside on weekends to ride the roads. There are few pedestrians on the road in the evening, and the temperature is just right for me to enjoy riding around the road. The dopamine secretion after each long fitness ride makes me very excited.

When working out outdoors, the braking performance of the bike is especially important, which will be your safety guarantee. It is equipped with Shimano MT400 brakes, then it can well meet my need for braking. The excellent braking ability allows me to be fully engaged when riding in fitness.

Main Features

Frame Group

I can only say that the design of this BMC Alpenchallenge 01 TWO is very much in line with my aesthetic for urban commuting bikes.

Because of the lightweight aluminum alloy manufacturing frame, the overall body is very light. The gray paint color makes the bike metallic.

It also has an internal cable routing design that allows me to ride without dragging and looks very clean from the outside.

I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by Alpenchallenge’s integration of the aero tube shape and the hidden fender brackets. Yes, it is more aerodynamic and gives you a better riding experience.

Everyone has different preferences when it comes to geometric design, and I’m happy with the geometry of this BMC Alpenchallenge 01 TWO.

The first is its 73.5° seat tube angle. The steeper angle allows the saddle to be more forward, which allows you to maintain a good posture and be more aerodynamic while riding.

Secondly, its equally steep head tube angle (72.0°) delivers responsive steering capability for easier city riding.

Finally, the right geometry will bring you more comfort while riding and this BMC Alpenchallenge 01 TWO certainly does.

Components and Specifications

Shimano GRX RX810 Drivetrain

BMC Alpenchallenge 01 TWO Shimano GRX RX810 Drivetrain

This Shimano GRX RX810 drivetrain provides a better silent experience on mixed terrain with the help of a chain stabilizer mechanism, while bringing better safety and accuracy in shifting.

It has an adjustable chain stabilizer that effectively prevents the chain from crashing and coming off. So you can finish shifting smoothly even on some rough roads.

And with an average weight of only 255 grams, it doesn’t add much to the overall weight of the bike after installation and use.

Shimano MT400 Brakes

For brake selection, the BMC Alpenchallenge 01 TWO uses Shimano MT400 brakes. This brake is customized for entry MTB riders with a minimum reachable lever range of up to 75mm, allowing you to brake with ease while riding.

And it uses Shimano hydraulic mineral oil, which has good heat dissipation ability. It is also very easy to install and disassemble, which is very friendly for some beginner riders.

Continental Contact Speed Tires

BMC Alpenchallenge 01 TWO Continental Contact Speed Tires

I have to say that this Continental Contact Speed tire gave me a very good riding experience. Because of the rough Slick profile, it looks extra smooth when riding, and with its durable casing and long-lasting tread, it is very suitable for sports use.

In addition, in terms of protection, the reinforced rubber sidewalls ensure a high level of puncture protection and sidewall wear, while its lightweight and low rolling resistance help delay its service life.

Other versions of BMC Alpenchallenge

BMC Alpenchallenge 01 ONE

In this review, we also tested the BMC Alpenchallenge 01 ONE.

Both bikes are part of the BMC Alpenchallenge series of aluminum commuter bikes, but in terms of weight, the Alpenchallenge 01 ONE is 3.4 pounds heavier than the BMC Alpenchallenge 01 TWO. Although the difference is small, we can still feel that the BMC Alpenchallenge 01 TWO is lighter and more energy efficient in actual riding.

In terms of shifting the former uses 1X8 internal shifting and the latter uses 2X11 external shifting. Therefore the former does not need to worry about the entry of sludge and sewage when riding, while the latter has more gearing options.

Also in terms of price the two are different, the BMC Alpenchallenge 01 TWO is $300 cheaper.

BMC Alpenchallenge 01 TWO vs Canyon Commuter 7 mid-step

Canyon Commuter 7 mid-step

Although both are also urban commuter bikes, this Canyon Commuter 7 mid-step is 6.9 lbs heavier than the BMC Alpenchallenge 01 TWO in terms of weight. When I was riding the comparison, the two gave me quite a sense of contrast. Mainly, the BMC Alpenchallenge 01 TWO is significantly more energy efficient when riding.

And in terms of looks, my partner and I both agreed that the BMC Alpenchallenge 01 TWO is much more refined. It garners a lot of stares on everyday rides.

If you like a lightweight and sophisticated-looking bike, then I recommend the BMC Alpenchallenge 01 TWO.

BMC Alpenchallenge 01 TWO vs Kona Dr Dew

Kona Dr Dew

This Kona Dr Dew uses a steel frame and its fork is also made of steel with a glossy metallic pewter color with turquoise decals. Although it looks more metallic in appearance than the BMC Alpenchallenge 01 TWO, in terms of performance, its fork is not as strong as one made of carbon.

It also has a 1×12 drivetrain, which has far fewer shifting options than the BMC Alpenchallenge 01. You might think the 1x drivetrain is easier to get started with in terms of shifting, but we didn’t feel the 2x drivetrain was much more complicated on the actual ride.

If you are looking for more shifting options and want to drive in different terrains, then the BMC Alpenchallenge 01 TWO is a better choice for you.

BMC Alpenchallenge 01 TWO vs Bulls Urban Copenhagen Diamond

Bulls Urban Copenhagen Diamond

The Bulls Urban Copenhagen Diamond is the same as the BMC Alpenchallenge 01 TWO in terms of material choice, both using aluminum frames. However, there are some differences in the front fork, the latter uses a carbon fork. This is more sensitive than the former in terms of steering and has a certain ability to absorb vibrations and bumps.

Also on the drivetrain, the Bulls Urban Copenhagen Diamond uses a 1X11 internal gearing. Although it does not require regular maintenance, it still has fewer gearing options than the latter. For some more complex terrain, the riding performance in it may be inferior to that of the BMC Alpenchallenge 01 TWO.

And geometrically, the bike’s top tube length and seat tube length are taller than the BMC Alpenchallenge 01 TWO, which also results in a taller frame that you may need to bend over more when riding.

I prefer this BMC Alpenchallenge 01 TWO.

BMC Alpenchallenge 01 TWO VS Cannondale Tesoro Mixte 2

Cannondale Tesoro Mixte 2

As for this Cannondale Tesoro Mixte 2, it is designed with a rear rack directly on the frame design, which makes it more convenient for your daily commute and you can place some personal items on the rear rack.

This is where it comes to its 3X10 drivetrain. Although there are enough options for shifting, we found in our daily rides that the 3X drivetrain is slightly more complicated. At the same time, its supporting components are slightly worse than those of the BMC Alpenchallenge 01 TWO.

If you have no previous experience with 3x drivetrains, I recommend the BMC Alpenchallenge 01 TWO, which is only $200 more expensive but offers a better riding experience with higher-end components.
