Momentum Lafree E+
Momentum Lafree E+

When I first saw the Momentum Lafree E+, I didn’t even realize it was an electric bike. If you ignore the rear-mounted battery, it looks very similar to the Momentum Vida with added mudguards and a lowered top tube.

The Vida is a decent hybrid bike that I’ve used as a commuting tool before. So, can the electric bike from the same brand, Momentum Lafree E+, leave a strong impression on me as well? Let’s wait and see.

Now, let’s analyze the riding experience, key features, components, and specifications of the Momentum Lafree E+. In the latter part of this article, we will also compare it with several other top bike models. If you want to learn more about bike reviews, you can follow us.

Riding Experience

After getting my hands on the Momentum Lafree E+, I started using it as my commuting tool for work. I’ve always thought that riding a bike through the concrete jungle of city streets is a cool thing to do.

Over time, I was gradually attracted to its comfort, safety, and other features, to the point where I would take it for outdoor relaxation on weekends. I must say, the Momentum Lafree E+ is a worthwhile electric bike.

Comfort

From the appearance of the Momentum Lafree E+, you can tell that it’s not an aggressive bike, and it certainly feels that way when you ride it.

The relaxed geometry allows me to maintain a more upright riding position, which is very friendly for commuters like me.

After all, no one wants to end up injuring their lower back while trying to exercise.

And the upright position also helps to observe the road, when there is a congestion or an unexpected situation, I can detect early and slow down or go around.

In addition, the 30.9mm alloy seat post allows you to make reasonable adjustments according to your height, and I usually adjust it to a length where my legs can stretch freely.

The plush and comfortable Momentum Comfort saddle also helps alleviate fatigue after a long day. Even in traffic jams or at red lights, it doesn’t become bothersome. Additionally, the groove design provides good ventilation, making it suitable even in the summer.

Safety

Commuting in the city doesn’t usually involve high speeds, but that doesn’t mean there’s no danger on the road.

Dealing with heavy traffic and crowds can be a headache, but luckily, the Momentum Lafree E+ comes equipped with Tektro HD-M275 hydraulic disc brakes with 160mm rotors both front and rear, allowing me to stop the bike in time and avoid collisions.

However, sometimes stopping can be a hassle too. There’s always someone behind you constantly honking.

Thankfully, the RideControl One command center on the Momentum Lafree E+ provides a simple and easy-to-use interface, allowing me to effortlessly switch power modes and use electric assistance to start the bike.

Otherwise, I would have been rear-ended multiple times by now.

Dealing with rainy or snowy weather is also a frustrating situation, as slippery road surfaces often lead to unexpected incidents. I still remember a couple of days ago when a bike suddenly lost control and rushed out at an intersection.

I instinctively squeezed the brakes tightly, but I was terrified nonetheless. Even if I had locked the wheels, I would still have crashed head-on if the tires had slipped. Fortunately, the CST Metropolitan Palm Bay tires have excellent traction, which saved my life.

Reliable

Occasionally, I take the Momentum Lafree E+ for a ride to the town of Orlando, which is 30 miles away, during my leisure time. I usually book a hotel for one or two nights on Skyscanner and then embark on the journey.

The 400Wh EnergyPak battery of the Momentum Lafree E+ is more than capable of handling this distance. In the six months I’ve had it, I’ve never encountered a situation where the battery ran out and I had to rely solely on my legs to continue.

Sometimes, I choose a route I haven’t taken before, which may include steep slopes. However, the 60Nm power output from the SyncDrive Life motor serves as my strong backup.

It utilizes Smart Assist technology and comes with six sensors that calculate torque, cadence, incline, and speed.

Rest assured, it provides smooth and powerful pedal assistance, complemented by the Shimano Altus 8-speed drivetrain, allowing me to easily tackle these obstacles.

All in all, I’m growing to love the Momentum brand more and more. Whether it’s the previous Momentum Vida or the current Momentum Lafree E+, both provide me with a great riding experience.

Specification

The Momentum Lafree E+ features a lightweight and durable ALUXX-grade aluminum frame, which not only reduces weight but also provides good safety.

The relaxed geometry allows for a more upright riding position, resulting in a more comfortable riding experience.

Furthermore, with the powerful SyncDrive Life Yamaha 250W mid-drive motor and the EnergyPak 400Wh battery, you can enjoy up to 60Nm of torque output and a maximum range of 65 miles.

The included 3Amp charger can fully charge the battery within 5 hours, greatly facilitating daily use.

Even when you encounter some challenging road surfaces, the CST Metropolitan Palm Bay 26×2.35″ tires can easily handle them. Their excellent traction performance and comfortable shock absorption are unforgettable.

One more thing worth mentioning is the Shimano HG-200 12-32T 8-speed drivetrain, which helps riders conquer steep slopes with ease.

Momentum Lafree E+ vs Electra Townie Go! 7D EQ Step-Thru

Electra Townie Go! 7D EQ Step-Thru
Electra Townie Go! 7D EQ Step-Thru

If you know electric bikes priced around $2000, then the Electra Townie Go! 7D EQ Step-Thru must have caught your attention.

The Electra Townie Go! 7D EQ Step-Thru, available in five vibrant colors, definitely caught my eye. The internal cable routing gives the whole bike a clean and tidy look, making it easy to clean as well.

Furthermore, for those who need night riding, the Electra Townie Go! 7D EQ Step-Thru, equipped with an LED lighting system, provides decent safety. The bright frame also makes you more visible in the dark.

However, the Hi-ten steel fork on the Electra Townie Go! 7D EQ Step-Thru, although sturdy enough, adds weight to the bike.

Additionally, its Hyena 250Wh battery cannot provide the same range as the Momentum Lafree E+ with its 400Wh EnergyPak battery. If you need to ride for a long time, the latter is more suitable.

Momentum Lafree E+ vs Bulls Twenty4 E

Bulls Twenty4 E
Bulls Twenty4 E

If it weren’t for the battery mounted above the downtube, I would consider the Bulls Twenty4 E to be a hardtail mountain bike.

Its performance with the SHIMANO Alivio, Altus groupset is indeed slightly better than the Momentum Lafree E+ with its SHIMANO Altus groupset.

The 24-inch SCHWALBE treaded tires also provide good traction. Together, these components can handle complex terrains more effectively.

Another noteworthy feature is that the Bulls Twenty4 E is equipped with an 80mm travel SR SUNTOUR XCT JR DS fork. This greatly reduces the impact from the road surface, providing a more comfortable ride for your arms.

However, it’s important to note that it is approximately $400 more expensive than the Momentum Lafree E+. So, if you have a limited budget and mainly ride on flat surfaces, the Momentum Lafree E+ might be more suitable for you.

Momentum Lafree E+ vs Charge Comfort 2 Step-Thru

Charge Comfort 2 Step-Thru
Charge Comfort 2 Step-Thru

The Charge Comfort 2 Step-Thru and the Momentum Lafree E+ have a similar appearance, both featuring a rear rack battery design.

For those seeking a comfortable riding experience, the Charge Comfort 2 Step-Thru is a good choice.

The ergonomic 205mm Charge Comfort+ saddle provides a soft and comfortable ride, while the Charge Comfort Ergo Soft Rubber grips help alleviate hand fatigue during long rides.

However, compared to the Tektro HD-M275 hydraulic disc brakes on the Momentum Lafree E+, the Charge Comfort 2 Step-Thru is equipped with Mechanical Disc brakes, which offer slightly less effort and braking effectiveness.

If you frequently commute on congested roads and require frequent braking, the Momentum Lafree E+ would provide a better experience.

Summary

Above is our review of Momentum Lafree E+. It offers a comfortable riding experience and good battery life, making it suitable for everyday use. It not only saves energy but also enhances the enjoyment of cycling.

In our opinion, the Momentum Lafree E+ is a bike worth purchasing, which is why we gave it a high rating of 4.8. If you’re interested in trying out higher-end electric bikes, feel free to check out our related tests.
