Rating (4.75/5)

Carrera Vulcan E Electric Mountain Bike

Although bicycles are not Halfords’ main business, the performance of the Carrera Vulcan E Electric Mountain Bike shows that there is no doubt that Halfords has been able to secure a position in the “Carrera” bike market as well.

It may not be for the devoted mountain biker, but for the beginner or intermediate rider, it will be the best partner. Because for these mountain riders, an e-bike with an auxiliary battery and motor is usually not on the list of considerations. But for those who lack confidence or stamina but want to try mountain sports, it is like a reliable companion.

If you consider fitting it with fenders or a rear rack, it will also be happy to accompany you through every workday as a commuter bike.

Here’s a breakdown of the Carrera Vulcan E Electric Mountain Bike’s riding experience, key features, and components and specifications.

If you want to know more, please remember to follow us, your attention is my greatest motivation to update.

Carrera Vulcan E Electric Mountain Bike Off-Road Riding

As you’d expect from a hardtail trail bike, the Carrera Vulcan E Electric Mountain Bike handles the rough trails just fine. At the beginning of my ownership of the Carrera Vulcan E, I rode it through the unpaved roads of the town to the potholed mountain trails.

If the Carrera Vulcan’s performance on hills is “passable”, I would give it an “excellent” rating on unpaved gravel roads anyway.

Right off the gravel road, I was drawn to the Carrera Vulcan E’s near upright riding position. It made me feel like I could breathe better, and I also had a greater range of vision. That means I don’t have to intentionally raise my eyes, the views on both sides of the trail come right into view, making me feel like I’m enjoying a vacation.

In addition, I love the extra-long Alloy Handlebar (760mm), which is too friendly for a rough and strong man like me. Because I can open my chest and stretch my shoulders to my heart’s content. And the Black MTB’s Grips grip is so comfortable that when I hold it tightly, it feels like my hands are being massaged.

When it came time to climb the dirt roads in the mountains, the Suntour HESC 250w rear hub motor made me feel the full kindness of Halfords. It seemed to read my mind and knew how much help I could give to make me most comfortable. It’s funny how I even feel guilty about my fat weight when I hear it make the “weng weng” sound.

On the downhill, I tried switching to ECO mode and the bike was still fast. I glanced down and saw 12.5mp written on the display and was inexplicably a little excited. Although the hill was a bit potholed, I felt very few bumps because the bike had 120mm Travel forks and the damping was very noticeable.

Carrera Vulcan E Electric Mountain Bike General Riding

If you think hardtail trail bikes can only be ridden in the mountains, then you may have to pay extra bills for a bike for everyday urban travel.

Carrera probably had this in mind. So the combination of battery and motor with 27.5″ x 2.1″ tires gives the Carrera Vulcan E even more versatility – even for city road riding.

Whenever the holidays and weekends, I am happy to ride it out, because it is convenient to hang out or run errands. I even use it as a commuter when the weather is nice.

Although Kenda K1027’s tires are hardly fast on the tarmac, they are very smooth and comfortable.

In addition, the frame of the bike is very road-riding friendly. Because I can feel that whenever I accelerate or turn, I can handle it fast and easily.

It’s worth mentioning that I like the LCD display mounted in the center of the Handlebar that I can see when I look down. Undoubtedly, the oversized font speed display is too friendly for me, a rider with not-so-sharp eyesight. After finishing my bike ride, I easily booked accommodation on IHG Hotels & Resorts. I can finally relax and rest well.

Main features

Frame Group

Carrera Vulcan E Electric Mountain Bike

Although the Carrera Vulcan E is always considered to be the entry-level of the Carrera series, it has the same aluminum frame as its “hybrid brother” the Crossfire E. But it has the same aluminum frame as its “hybrid brother” the Crossfire E. It is strong and light.

The aluminum frame is reinforced with header tube corner gussets. Admittedly, Halfords prefers it to be sturdy rather than beautiful. But that’s not to say it’s not beautiful; it is.

The Carrera Vulcan E has a very minimalist, tasteful appearance because of the cable layout of the internal alignment, the pleasing matte metallic grey finish, and the Carrera brand decals.

Also, the thoughtful Carrera has followed the XC hardtail bike standard for its geometry. So you will have a very spacious cockpit.

The battery visible to the naked eye at the down tube also gives the audience a sense of security. You will also have a more comfortable ride than an electric bike with a rear-mounted battery.

Last but not least, if you want to use it for commuting, it is recommended that you remember to add fenders when you purchase the bike from Halfords’ website. And the rear rack is also available if needed.

Components and Specifications

Suntour Performance Rear Hub Drive, 250Wh Motor

The proven Suntour HESC rear hub motor, cleverly combined with ATS Active Torque Sensing, will create the most comfortable and natural pedaling sensation for you.

Those who are familiar with Carrera E-Bike should know that the ATS will measure the amount of pressure applied by the rider on the pedal together with the cadence sensor of the pedal. According to the pedaling state, the ATS provides the appropriate amount of force to make the rider have the most realistic and natural pedaling experience. At the same time, this smooth and natural riding style also helps to extend the battery life. I believe this is one of the reasons why Carrera insists on using it.

In addition, as mentioned before, the LCD central display allows you to view information such as speed, battery capacity, and assist level. At the same time, it will also provide riders with four assist modes, namely ECO, TOUR, CLIMB, and SPORT, giving riders plenty of room to choose.

Semi-Integrated 417Wh Battery

Carrera Vulcan E Electric Mountain Bike Semi-Integrated 417Wh Battery

The 36v 11.6ah, 417Wh battery is neatly mounted on the downtube. Although it doesn’t look like a lot of capacity, the 60-mile range makes it seem like a great deal of power. That’s because it’s more than enough to handle general mountain riding and daily commuting.

But I also have to be realistic and tell you that in the so-called range you have to measure is the rider’s weight, riding style, terrain, and wind speed specifics. But in my experience of riding for over a year, a range of 55 miles is normal under normal circumstances.

In addition, the integrated battery management system prevents the battery from overcharging, overheating, or short-circuiting, effectively extending the battery life.

And, like all other e-bikes in the Carrera line, this battery is backed by a 2-year warranty or a 500-charge warranty. Whichever comes first, giving purchasers added peace of mind.

Suntour XCM-DS HLO – 120mm Travel Fork

Suntour XCM-DS HLO’s Fork is not the most expensive, but it must be the most suitable for Carrera Vulcan E. Because it has a practical 120mm travel and a locking function, it is very practical.

You may not feel it on a flat road, but when faced with a rough mountain road, you will appreciate its presence to save you from the pain of bumps to your upper arms as well as your internal organs. Especially on potholes as well as gravel trails, it can make you comfortable enough.

But I also have to be honest and tell you that you can’t expect it to accompany you to make too many big fancy jumps, after all, you get what you pay for.

Other Components

Carrera Vulcan E Electric Mountain Bike

I believe that every new player has felt the charm of Shimano’s 9-speed drivetrain.

Alloy Pedals complement the 42T Alloy Crank and drive the Cassette (9 Speed – 11-36T) on the fly. With the help of the motor hub, it makes off-roading incredibly easy.

At the same time, Tektro Hydraulic Disc Brake supports your parking needs anywhere, anytime, with just the slightest band of force from your fingers, and you’ll be securely parked.

In addition, the extremely grippy Kenda K1027 tires are a presence you shouldn’t overlook.

What we like about it

  • The superb price/performance ratio makes it Carrera’s best-selling hardtail off-road e-bike.
  • Aluminum frame with comfortable geometry gives you more confidence to face the mountain.
  • The Suntour HESC rear hub drive Motor with 417Wh Battery takes you on the most natural and comfortable mountain journey.
  • Integrated battery management system to give your battery a longer life.
  • If you’re afraid of bumps in the mountains, the Fork (Suntour XCM-DS HLO, 120 mm Travel) will change your impression of trail riding.
  • The large, clear display of your speed, assist mode, odometer, battery level, and other information is unambiguous.
  • Commuting with it is also the choice of most people as long as you want.

What we don’t like about it

  • Some people don’t like its weight, but in fact, people who don’t like electric bikes are afraid of the burden of the weight of the battery and motor.

Voodoo BIZANGO-E vs Carrera Vulcan E Electric Mountain Bike

Voodoo BIZANGO-E

Probably the most impressive thing about the Voodoo BIZANGO-E is its very nice Fork (130mm Travel). Yes, the RockShox Judy air fork has great shock absorption, so riding the Voodoo BIZANGO-E on the mountain will make you feel very comfortable.

Although it uses Shimano Steps electrodes and batteries, the 418Wh capacity doesn’t support it for too long a distance, and the 25-mile length will probably leave most riders feeling unfulfilled. Therefore, I think its $2,999 price tag is a bit steep. So, the Carrera Vulcan E Electric Mountain Bike, with its lower price and long range, is more likely to get my vote.

Carrera Vengeance E Mens Electric Bike vs Carrera Vulcan E Electric Mountain Bike

Carrera Vengeance E Mens Electric Bike

I’m sure Carrera fans have heard of the Carrera Vengeance E Mens Electric Bike, and with its similar geometry and motor equipment, it’s always discussed in the same breath as the Carrera Vulcan E.

Admittedly, the Carrera Vengeance E Mens Electric Bike has a price advantage. For newcomers to the mountain cross-country, it is a cost-effective piece of equipment. But you also have to see that the Carrera Vulcan E has a longer range and longer fork travel, as well as a larger, clearer LCD display. So it can give you a farther, more comfortable, and easier riding experience.

So, if the Carrera Vulcan E has the quality you care about, you can’t go wrong with it. But if you want to feel the fun of mountain off-road at a cheaper price Carrera Vengeance E will not disappoint you either.

ROCKRIDER 27.5 Inch Electric Mountain Bike E-ST 500 vs Carrera Vulcan E Electric Mountain Bike

ROCKRIDER 27.5 Inch Electric Mountain Bike E-ST 500

As an entry-level Decathlon presence, the ROCKRIDER 27.5 Inch Electric Mountain Bike E-ST 500 also has good performance and three very natural power modes. If the Carrera Vulcan E didn’t exist, I would probably choose it.

Because both in braking and drivetrain, I think it is slightly better. Also, the 60Nm motor and the hydraulic brake discs give the rider a smoother riding experience.

But the feeling is a very subjective thing. If you want to experience the ROCKRIDER 27.5 Inch Electric Mountain Bike E-ST 500, it’s not a bad idea.

REID E-Trail 2.0 eBike vs Carrera Vulcan E Electric Mountain Bike

REID E-Trail 2.0 eBike

I have to admit that the REID E-Trail 2.0 eBike has great passability on single-track trails and a range of nearly 70 miles is appealing. However, my actual riding experience tells me that the REID E-Trail 2.0 eBike’s boosting effect does not help me a lot. Many times, especially in climbing sports, I still feel that pedaling will make me sweat and make me feel that I might as well have no battery and motor.

So if you’re a runner who’s afraid of sweating too much in the mountains, the Carrera Vulcan E might be more your speed.
