VanMoof, headquartered in the Netherlands, began producing bicycles in 2009 and later gained fame for its minimalist design. VanMoof faced financial instability and temporarily closed its physical retail stores. Nonetheless, we wanted to explore the VanMoof A5. Fortunately, we managed to order the VanMoof A5.
In the following sections, we will analyze the riding experience, key features, components, specifications, and other versions of the VanMoof A5. First Impressions
VanMoof caught my eye with its minimalist design, and I was genuinely interested in it. I did some research and learned that their S3/X3 models won the Red Dot Design Award for the second time in 2020. So, in May of this year, I started planning to test this bike, but due to some reasons, it was postponed. Only now, after checking its recent reports, did I find out that it faced financial troubles this summer. Nonetheless, I wanted to test this bike. After all, according to the latest information I’ve come across, VanMoof will make announcements soon.
It’s worth noting that both the VanMoof S5 and VanMoof A5 initially attracted attention. These two frame designs are different, with the S5 having a straight frame and the A5 featuring a lower step-in, angled frame, each with its unique characteristics. For instance, the VanMoof S5 claims to be more suitable for calm and relaxed cruising. In contrast, the VanMoof A5 claims to be more suitable for agile and nimble riding. As you can see, we chose the VanMoof A5.
City Commute
I have to say, the 24″ tires might look relatively small, but they’re unlike many other electric bikes. It immediately gave me the impression of “pure design, reflecting the core qualities of a bicycle,” as reported.
When I started it on the streets of Los Angeles, the A5 equipped with the Gen 5 Motor and Gen 5 E-shifter combination provided direct and powerful assistance, reaching 63Nm of torque, making it quite robust from the start. When faced with small inclines in the city, the Turbo Boost feature made its acceleration direct and decisive. Furthermore, the handlebar design has significantly changed from the previous X3 model. It removed the tubular display and adopted the more considerate Halo Ring. For me, this is an interesting and convenient upgrade.
Moreover, the Halo Ring on the right side allows for clear visibility of my speed and assistance level information during every moment of the ride. This allows me to adjust speed and assistance according to road conditions while cycling through the city. Unlike many electric bikes, you can see the Halo Ring on its left side. Just a glance is enough to see how much battery life remains, making it convenient and aesthetically simple.
Anti-Theft Design
In bustling urban environments, bicycle theft prevention technology is worth paying attention to. After all, the price of any electric bike is not exactly cheap. The VanMoof A5 features an improved Kick Lock on the rear wheel. You can lock the bike in place simply by giving the pedal a light kick. How do you confirm whether it’s locked or unlocked? You can check the status through the Halo Ring interface. When I came back, the VanMoof A5 detected my smartphone, and it automatically unlocked. Of course, if you didn’t bring your phone, you can also enter a password to unlock it.
I must say that the urban riding experience is fantastic! Whether it’s the power system or the intelligent anti-theft technology, I think there’s absolutely no problem using it for daily commuting.
Light Gravel Riding
To get a more comprehensive understanding of the VanMoof A5’s performance, I even took it to a nearby park with gravel paths. It must be acknowledged that the 24″ small wheels of the VanMoof A5 are very agile and roll naturally on these paths. Additionally, its cruiser-style handlebar is easy to maneuver. However, I have to say that because of the absence of a suspension system, relying on the soft saddle to absorb vibrations on these bumpy trails isn’t a great idea. So, if you don’t want your backside to be put to the test, it’s best to avoid riding this bike on such gravelly roads.
Specifications
The minimalist exterior design of the VanMoof A5 is noteworthy, and I won’t repeat too much here. However, I should mention that its frame is made of aluminum, making it relatively lightweight (weight: 48.5 lbs). The VanMoof A5 doesn’t skimp on accessories to preserve the bike’s purity. It even has fenders to protect the chain.
Moreover, if you need to carry more items, you can order the 5-Series Front Rack as an additional accessory. Mounting it on the front of the bike allows you to bring extra gear. If you require more storage space, you can also order an A5 Rear Rack. The VanMoof A5’s rear rack can carry up to 15 kg of cargo, making it suitable for many people.
Furthermore, the VanMoof A5 equipped with the Gen 5 Motor and Gen 5 E-shifter operates smoothly. For riders who dislike noise, the experience is fantastic. The torque sensor and automatic shifting technology make cycling even easier.
It’s also worth mentioning its charging speed. It only takes 6 hours and 30 minutes to charge from 0% to 100%. Of course, I wouldn’t recommend depleting the battery completely before recharging. Even though it has a battery capacity of 468Wh, providing ample range, for the sake of battery health, I’m personally inclined to recharge when I see the Halo Rings on the left side indicating 30% to 50% battery remaining.

Specialized Turbo Como 3.0 650B vs. VanMoof A5
These two bikes both feature step-through frames. However, the Specialized Turbo Como 3.0 has larger 650b tires compared to the VanMoof A5, making it more suitable for riders who are smaller in stature.
Additionally, these two bikes have similar battery capacities. So, if that’s the only consideration, either one could be worth trying. However, the Specialized Turbo Como 3.0 has a torque of only 50Nm, while the VanMoof A5 has a slightly higher torque, reaching 68Nm. In comparison, the VanMoof A5 will provide quicker starts and accelerations. But if you are an environmental enthusiast, you might prefer the Specialized Turbo Como 3.0 for its recyclable battery.
In my personal opinion, the choice between these two bikes should be based on your specific needs. Also, it’s worth mentioning that the VanMoof A5 is currently not available for sale. So, if you’re interested in it, you may need to wait for further updates.

CUBE TOURING HYBRID ONE 500 vs. VanMoof A5
The CUBE TOURING HYBRID is priced at $1,128 less than the VanMoof A5, but it is 8.2 pounds heavier. Honestly, this slight increase in weight doesn’t affect me much. Additionally, the CUBE TOURING HYBRID has a larger battery capacity (500Wh) compared to the VanMoof A5, and its recyclable battery aligns better with current environmental concerns. Moreover, the CUBE TOURING HYBRID boasts higher torque than the VanMoof, resulting in quicker acceleration and starts.
However, the CUBE TOURING HYBRID uses 700c-sized tires, making it larger than the VanMoof A5, which might be less manageable for riders of smaller stature.
In terms of design, the CUBE TOURING HYBRID appears relatively more intricate. So, for riders like me who prefer minimalism, the VanMoof A5 might be a more appealing choice.
Of course, your selection should be based on your specific needs.
Canyon Precede:ON 5 step-through vs. VanMoof A5
I have to admit that the Canyon Precede:ON 5 step-through took me by surprise. Setting aside its visual design, its performance, overall build, and the $2,599 price tag left me a bit astonished.
The first thing that caught my attention was the carbon fiber front fork of the Canyon Precede:ON 5 step-through. It might handle lightweight gravel paths better than the VanMoof A5.
Secondly, it offers a larger battery capacity compared to the VanMoof A5. However, the torque is slightly lower at 63Nm. I didn’t find this to be a significant difference as it’s just a 5Nm gap.
Moreover, it features Shimano components for the drivetrain and brakes (Shimano Deore M5100 for the drivetrain and Shimano MT200 for the brakes). So, it’s entirely dependable when it comes to braking and shifting.
That said, as I mentioned earlier, in terms of aesthetics, I tend to lean towards the simplicity of the VanMoof A5. However, if you’re considering budget and all factors, the Canyon Precede:ON 5 step-through is worth a try.
Orbea VIBE MID H30 vs. VanMoof A5
The Orbea VIBE MID H30 has 700c wheels, which make it appear larger and offer improved off-road capability. However, that’s not to say that the Orbea VIBE MID H30 with smaller wheels is subpar. Smaller wheels make it more suitable for shorter riders and provide a relatively nimble and easy-to-maneuver experience.
In terms of battery capacity, the VanMoof A5 still has an edge. So, if you prioritize range, I think the VanMoof A5 is worth a try.
However, it’s worth mentioning that the Orbea VIBE MID H30 features a carbon fiber front fork, which provides better shock absorption. As always, the choice should align with your specific needs.
