Riding Experience
My initial impression upon receiving the Scott Metrix 20 was how visually appealing it is. The design aesthetic truly shines. Furthermore, the bike’s geometry, combined with its quality components, offers impressive riding capabilities.
To test it out, I packed the Scott Metrix 20 and headed to Austin, TX for a ride along a countryside loop. The roads here vary from flat to hilly, with some sections even featuring unpaved gravel surfaces. After booking a nearby hotel on IHG, I set off with the bike.
Countryside Ride
During uphill climbs on the countryside roads, the lightweight aluminum frame of the Scott Metrix 20 proved to be responsive and rigid, allowing for efficient pedal strokes. The frame’s stiffness contributed to a sense of unity, offering faster riding speeds without any sluggishness.
When riding on flat roads, the slightly aggressive geometry minimized wind resistance. The smooth and precise Shimano Tiagra shifting made for efficient riding, enabling me to effortlessly reach higher speeds.
On longer downhill stretches, the 700c wheel size facilitated rapid descents even without pedaling. The Shimano BL-MT201 hydraulic disc brakes, combined with the Shimano SM-RT10 CL rotor 180/F and 160/R, delivered reliable braking performance. Even with continuous braking, there was no noticeable reduction in braking effectiveness due to overheating.
In summary, the Scott Metrix 20 performed efficiently on flat roads, and its dependable performance gave me peace of mind.
Gravel Riding
The Scott Metrix 20 also handled bumpy gravel paths with ease. The carbon fiber front fork exhibited controlled deformation when encountering bumps, absorbing road vibrations for a smoother ride.
Additionally, the combination of 700x40c wheels provided excellent traction, allowing me to roll over small loose stones and potholes on the ground. The generous 40c tire width not only absorbed road vibrations but also proved durable, minimizing the risk of punctures.
In conclusion, the Scott Metrix 20 offered a comfortable experience on unpaved gravel roads. It’s versatile, making it suitable for daily commutes on well-paved city roads, as well as venturing onto the gravel roads of the surrounding countryside. Its versatility makes it a true all-rounder.
