Every time I venture out for an off-road ride, my enthusiasm soars. However, whenever I come across roads covered in gravel, I find myself having to slow down. While the ride remains enjoyable, I often feel like something is missing. This led me to discover the Specialized S-Works Diverge, and I was eagerly anticipating its performance.

Riding Experience
To thoroughly test the Specialized S-Works Diverge, I booked a flight and reserved a hotel on IHG to visit Bolton Valley Resort.
At Bolton Valley Resort, I opted for the Hydra trail. This trail spans 748 feet and has a downward slope with a 141-foot elevation drop. The narrow, rugged road surface is filled with gravel, making it impassable for regular bikes. The steep downhill grade poses a significant challenge to my riding experience.
Gravel Road
Starting from the beginning, I noticed that other types of bike tires tend to collide heavily with the gravel during downhill sections. However, the Specialized S-Works Diverge features Pathfinder Pro 2BR Tan sidewall 700×42 tires, which mitigate these collisions. Thanks to its durable casing and BlackBelt puncture protection, it effectively minimizes the risks of riding on gravel roads. The 42c tires can easily roll over small gravel, and I feel the strong traction that prevents slipping on smooth large stones. The sensation of gliding over obstacles is truly remarkable.
Controlling the Roval Terra wheels, I skillfully navigate through the gaps between gravel that the bike can’t fully clear. This maneuvering provides an exhilarating feeling of control, and I thoroughly enjoy the focused sensation. During sharp turns, I find comfort in the Body Geometry S-Works Power saddle as I shift my weight to guide the bike through each curve. Even if unexpected situations arise, the SRAM Red eTap AXS hydraulic disc brake ensures timely braking, effectively ensuring my safety.
During occasional uphill sections and jumps, I adjust the SRAM XX1 Eagle AXS 1×12 Electronic rear derailleur to its lowest gear ratio for maximum power. Ascending smoothly, I then prepare for jumps, adjusting my posture. The 20mm front travel absorbs some of the impact, providing an exhilarating sensation despite enduring some jolts. As I land, I continue riding forward with a sense of exhilaration.

Throughout the entire ride, I could feel the exceptional comfort of the Specialized S-Works Diverge’s Body Geometry S-Works Power saddle. With its firm FACT carbon fiber shell, it provides excellent support. The central cutout effectively alleviates pressure on sensitive areas, allowing me to sit on the saddle without experiencing significant discomfort or pressure.
Furthermore, gripping the Roval Terra carbon handlebar, I could sense its ergonomic design. Gripping the handlebar didn’t exert excessive pressure, and I found that I had better control over the bike. The bar widens by 12° at the drop, enhancing stability and ensuring a smooth ride experience.

In contrast, the Specialized Diverge E5 has a 2×8 drivetrain with a smaller gear range and less smooth operation. The 1×12 Electronic single-chainring design effectively prevents chain drops.
