When I set foot in Queenstown, New Zealand, the land surrounded by magnificent mountains and murmuring streams. I know this will be a unique cycling journey. My partner is the brand new Trek Powerfly FS 4 Gen 3 electric all suspension bicycle. It will accompany me through this magical land with its unique charm.

The sunlight shone through the sparse clouds and onto the winding mountain paths. The path is initially flat, with lush trees on both sides and occasional bird songs, clear and pleasant. But soon, the road began to become rough, with rocks and tree roots interlocking, as if testing the strength of me and this bicycle. However, the full suspension system of the Trek Powerfly FS 4 Gen 3 made me feel like I was walking on flat ground. Every bump is easily resolved by it, allowing me to focus on the road ahead.

Climbing

As the altitude steadily rises, the road ahead steepens progressively. Drawing in a deep breath, I fine-tuned the motor of my Trek Powerfly FS 5 Gen 4 to its highest setting, gearing up for the impending challenge. The motor instantly surged with robust power, propelling me steadily skyward. Even on the most inclined stretches, I could sense the relentless power assistance, as though I possessed boundless energy reserves.

Throughout the ascent, the Trek Powerfly FS 5 Gen 4’s 130mm front fork and 120mm rear stroke suspension system proved invaluable. They adeptly dampened the road’s vibrations, ensuring my hands remained steady and allowing me to concentrate fully on the path ahead. The advanced 12-speed Shimano drivetrain afforded me the flexibility to seamlessly adjust gear ratios in response to varying road conditions, guaranteeing optimal pedaling efficiency at all times.

Descending

After negotiating the arduous climb, I finally stood atop the mountain. Before me stretched a winding descent, framed by deep valleys and swift-flowing streams on either side. Taking a deep breath, I adjusted the motor of my Trek Powerfly FS 5 Gen 4 to its lowest gear. Simultaneously, I pressed the brake button on the state-of-the-art Bluetooth LED remote control, poised to indulge in a thrilling ride of speed and exhilaration.

Firstly, the 2018 and 2019 Trek Powerfly 5 models featured a 1×10 drivetrain, whereas the Trek Powerfly 5 boasts a 1×12 drivetrain, offering a broader gear range without compromising on shifting comfort. Secondly, while the 2018 and 2019 Trek Powerfly 5 models came equipped with Shimano brakes, which I personally prefer, they were basic versions, leaving me somewhat disappointed given the price point.

Lastly, with advancements in technology, the Trek Powerfly 5 has seen upgrades in both its components and motor. Even though it commands a higher price, in terms of technological sophistication and practicality, I am more than willing to pay for the Trek Powerfly 5.

• Are the new models compatible with the 750Wh smart system battery?

No. Powerfly’s comfortable geometry doesn’t leave enough room for the very long 750wh battery.

• Do any frame sizes feature curved top tubes for lower standover?

All sizes of Powerfly FS have a very slight curve in the top tube for excellent standover clearance.

The XS and S Powerfly hardtail has a curved top tube.

• In which Mino Link position does the bike ship?

Powerfly FS does not have Mino Link.

• Which version of Knock Block does it use?
